Whats your take on 2ndary sources? Irrelevant or authoritative?

Personally I've found that they are only useful as an example of interpretation, an illustration of something that one needs to do on one's own to truly understand the primary source, ie you will only grasp anything of it once you are able to put together a particular interpretation of it. Anything else is just empty memorization that will be useless.
