there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I'm too tough for him,
I say, stay in there, I'm not going
to let anybody see
you.
there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I pour whiskey on him and inhale
cigarette smoke
and the whores and the bartenders
and the grocery clerks
never know that
he's
in there.

there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I'm too tough for him,
I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?
there's a bluebird in my heart that
wants to get out
but I'm too clever, I only let him out
at night sometimes
when everybody's asleep.
I say, I know that you're there,
so don't be
sad.
then I put him back,
but he's singing a little
in there, I haven't quite let him
die
and we sleep together like
that
with our
secret pact
and it's nice enough to
make a man
weep, but I don't
weep, do
you?

Shoot.
Look man... I'm really sorry. I was so thrilled that you managed to do the thing at all that I didn't want to look a gift horse in the mouth. You were a random stranger and not only did you fix my audio levels, you made a video to boot. Only the most abject of selfish retards would've complained about that at the time.
And you DID do a great video over all... I just don't think you were familiar with the tone of what I was originally satarizing. The graphics at the beginning are a tad too quickly-cut for what's supposed to be a PBS parody. And you also misspelled a few things in the subtitles.
But you did great overall. I'm sorry to insult your work like this. Hope you aren't angry with me going forward.

I come from a family of academics. I'm the only STEM major in a family full of professors who read voraciously.

And yet, as anti-intellectual as it might sound, I must relay the advice that virtually everyone in my family subscribes to: the worst gift you can give anyone is a book.

I know that sounds counterintuitive, like something only a pleb would say, but hear me out. The problem is that everyone's got a stack. You know: a stack of books on their bedside table they've been meaning to get to. I myself have been meaning to start Crime & Punishment, and then after that I need to read Four Fish and The Golden Bough.

So any book you give a person will add to that stack. They'll be forced to smile, and nod, and say "oh, how lovely!" as they unwrap the thing. But deep down, they'll know they'll never get around to it.

And the worst part is: they'll probably actually WANT to. They'll probably be genuinely interested in what you picked out. So it'll hurt way more than just having to lie about how much they enjoyed a gift that sucked. They'll look you in the eye with smiles and false hopes and wish to God that their lies were true. But deep down, whatever you gotten them, they'd know that "100 Years of Solitude" was still unread on their shelf. And into the stack your book would go.

So as much as you both may like books, anon, don't get her one. Get something like a t-shirt with an obscure literary reference on it that nobody will understand. Maybe something that the two of you are already familiar with: a signal that you're part of the same "in" crowd might serve to strengthen your relationship.

>i spent too long on the internet and i've seen the most abhorrent shit
I think I know where you're coming from. The problem is, I think, that you need to get of 4chan.

I've seen some horrible things here as well. I made friends with some people in college, because they also used this site and I thought we were kindred spirits. But then they both turned out to be gay furry Nazi pedophiles who hated democracy, women and Jews.

Now I'm alone in this world, because they've just become too crazy for me, and all my other possible connections from college are hyper-PC maniacs who believe the cops should be abolished and that the Tienanmen Square Massacre never happened.

I've finally gotten a job, and have saved up enough money to start some serious therapy. I don't know what your financial situation is, so I'm not sure how well you can fight off the darkness. But whatever answers you're looking for, you won't find them here.

You have to start going out there and forcing yourself into social situations. Go into a bar or restaurant, order a drink, and then leave. Do this every day. Look for book clubs at your local library or whatever and find some kind of social outlet.

That's what I'm trying to do anyway. People like us, our best social years are in college, and that has passed me by. I'm like one of those losers who peaked socially in high school, and now talks of nothing but boring stories from that era. But I'm trying to get better, and I think I'm making progress. I'm sure you will too, if you just don't lose sight of everything.

But get off of 4chan first. Understand this: you don't have too much empathy. You have too much empathy for this site. And that's a good thing; get out of here before this place robs you of it
