I made a thread about Turkish lit a few days ago, here are the posts/recs I copied down:

"Wisdom of Royal Glory, by Yusuf Has Hajib
Book of Dede Korkut
Epic of Köroğlu
Memed, My Hawk, by Yaşar Kemal
Seyahâtnâme, by Evliya Çelebi
Muhayyelât, by Ali Aziz Efendi
The Dar Zamanlar trilogy, by Adalet Ağaoğlu
The Black Book, by Orhan Pamuk "

"Sabahattin Ali, Yusuf Atılgan, Sait Faik Abasıyanık. They are easy to read. (Orhan Pamuk is retarded don't read him.)
After reading them you are now ready for the good stuff. Try your first Turkish modernist novels, go with Ahmed Hamdi Tanpınar and Oguz Atay. You will probably take your time with Atay and also no better writer came after him so my recs end here.

For poetry, you are fine with only reading Nazım Hikmet. Avoid islamist pigs like Necip Fazıl and Mehmet Akif. "

"Book of Dede Korkut
Yunus Emre - Divan
Evliya Çelebi - Seyahatname
Vatan Yahut Silistre - Namuk Kemal
Yaban - Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu
Time Regulation Institute - Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar
The Disconnected - Oğuz Atay
My Name is Red - Orhan Pamuk
Memed, My Hawk - Yaşar Kemal"

"and about your second question
Book of Dede Korkut for epic heritage

for folk poetry
Yunus Emre (as stated above)

For travel/history (think Herodotus)
Evliya Çelebi

For divan (classic) poetry
I don't have much info on that (cuz it's quite hard to comprehend these texts with cont. turkish language)

for early modern prose
Yakup Kadri, namık Kemal

for republican prose
ahmet hamdi tanpınar, oğuz atay, orhan pamuk, yaşar kemal

for republican poetry
mehmet akif ersoy, nazım hikmet ran, necip fazıl kısakürek, orhan veli, sezai karakoç, cahit külebi,"

Hope this helps!

Turkey is one of the great European nations but I have very little knowledge of their literary tradition. What are the great works of Turkish lit?
