Storm of Steel is obligatory. I recommend reading the 1960 version. A Farewell to Arms is fiction but is one of my favourite books and I can't rec it strongly enough. And my favourite book of all time is picrel, about an English journalist's witness of the Bosnian war and it's simultaneously the most beautiful, tragic, and badass thing I've ever read. There's a sequel too which is just as good and is a must-read as well.

what're /lit/'s favorite memoirs or autobiographies? I'll read one about anything; there's nothing better than when the writing style and actual events click with each other.
I'd like to find one written by a director or some other artistic type

>"Peace seems to allow so little space for belief in destiny, fate, God, or ghosts...but even discounting the iced down state of my senses...London seems a wasteland of spiritless order, the unvarying rhythm of its days somehow denying the possibility of any other dimension."

My War Gone By I Miss It So by Anthony Loyd. It's a fantastic account of the Bosnian war by an aspiring war correspondent who also happens to be addicted to heroin. It's an amazing book.

Gravity's Rainbow is a really hard read anon, and I don't think it's especially what you're looking for anyways. -t. has read the first 120 pages of it.
May I suggest a non-fiction book? This is literally my favourite book and you should read it. It's about the Bosnian war in the 1990s.

My War Gone by, I Miss It So by Anthony Loyd. An incredible true story about a novice journalist's first-hand, gonzo account of the war in Bosnia and all the tragedy that came with it, as well as a telling of Loyd's odd sense of satisfaction and completeness war and conflict brings him.
A few of my other all-time favourites are Storm of Steel by Ernst Jünger (1960 version, haven't read the 1929 edition yet), A Farewell to Arms by Hemingway, House of Leaves by MZD, The Hobbit by Tolkien, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch & several other books by Philip K. Dick, On the Road & The Dharma Bums as well as Desolation Angels by Jack Kerouac...

So when Beba asked if I would like to go across to the Serb side with him, I thought he was joking. He was a liaison officer in the government army, a Muslim. We were standing together on a crest of ground overlooking the Serb lines. A ceasefire had been organized so that the Serbs could collect some of their dead from a failed attack of the previous week. Under the terms of this deal, Beba and four of his men, wearing purple sashes over their smocks, tuned in to the Serb net on their motorolas, and stood up above the trenches at the foot of Mount Vlaši. The Serbs came out of their lines and began searching through the scrub for their dead, responding to the shouts of Beba and his men. ‘No, left a bit, left a bit, are you blind? Yeah, there, see him?’ they would call out. There looked to be about a dozen corpses, but the Serbs only managed to retrieve four. The rest lay in a minefield, and were abandoned to the earth. ‘Now I’m going to meet them,’ Beba said to me, ‘do you want to come?’ I was stunned for a minute. Muslim soldiers talking to the Serbs on radios or across trenchlines happened all the time, but to actually cross into their zone was something I had not heard of. Of course I agreed.
