Because Otaku lit (and media in general) is about the propagation, classification, and ultimately the consumption of moe elements without regard to a grand narrative.
No work is consumed completely by itself as an independent entity but rather with the entire history and media mix of all other otaku works as a backdrop.

Anyone here read or is interested in this subject. Busy reading through Otaku: Japan's Database Animals and it's really interesting. I've got a reading list of a bunch of books I want to get into so I'm willing to share. If you have any recommendations please share too.
