This. I didn't like that Houellebecq had both of the women commit suicide, even though I understood why he did it. In reality they would have been given drugs to make them to function listlessly. Bruno's gf might not have gone for it, but Annabelle definitely would have.

I got to the chapter directly after Annabel was in the commune, and I just can't do it. I teared up in a bus and just put down the book. That was almost a week ago. I refuse to read it any further. It is too painful. Why did things end up like this, /lit/?

PS: There was some good parts on it. Like the ones where he shat on hippie culture. That was really funny. And it can be really instructive for the people here who wanna know how we got to this state of things. But it gets tiresome after a while, all these fucking descripitions. My problem with that is that it's not even that kind of "sad beauty". This book is just gross materialism, ironically. It doesn't offer any valid option. Also I thought that ending with the creation of a new species was a little bit rushed.
