There was a series about a group of problem solvers that would go around the galaxy who's careers were measured in how many turns of the galaxy they'd been at it. They were more or less human but would edit out their memories to keep from going mad but they could be backed up or restored. Such a setting implies an incomprehensible scale but the story only focuses on a few places because of course it does.

Don't remember what it was called but I recall the series as being OK but not great.
