>God is dead. Not only is one’s belief destroyed but one’s belief in beliefs is also shattered.
>Do not seek to believe, seek to know.
I don't think it is a coincidence that faith is collapsed in a time (modernity) when the human mind, which has only so much capacity to examine different positions, is overwhelmed with so much difference that it cannot create for itself a clear picture of the world. It seems that to me that it is precisely because we cannot know that religious faith has declined, because before modernity, our communities would serve as an epistemological grounding, and we would clearly see God in the face of the Other. Now we are strangers among strangers, and it takes an extraordinary effort to reach across such distance and to really know another.

You need to be more agnostic about suffering. Having the unit 'suffering' in your mind like this smacks of gnosticism, which is ipso facto alienation. If you want to be consistent with the ideals of goodness and sacrifice you are pondering here, you need to engage lovingly with the world outside of your head.
