It’s very campy. The horror elements are very much of the period and have become very quaint and naive (which is, admittedly, a little endearing). It also lacks the formalism of later Gothic horror.
Imagining Walpole’s prissy Oxford mates getting spooked by this at night in their chambers is rather amusing, though. Worth a look in as an example of early horror, which seems to be your primary interest, OP, but it’s of little value beyond that.
