So /lit/,
I was reading Journey to the Center of the Earth today, and I've been thinking about literature in general. It seems to me that there is an undeniable divide in style between it and, for example, Catch 22 or The Sound and the Fury. There are arguments to be made about these and other books' quality, but I'm not interested in such discussions. I'd much rather hear if you think that works that vary by epoch, genre or style are at all comparable. Is there any reasonable way of comparing the Iliad to A Tale of Two Cities? To Neverwhere? How about prose to poetry, or literature to film or music?

Read all the novels of James Joyce.
Then read all his correspondence and published letters.
Then read a healthy cross-section of critique (post-structural, feminist, et al.) on his work.
Read his work again and be sure to add your own annotation.
2nd quest: Do it all again in a foreign language.

It sucks because I'm going to read Wolfe based on how many people take him seriously, and it's going to wind up being another fantasy crapper.

or

Your body will sag. You will still desire.

I'm writing a novel -- for a class -- and since I've always wanted to do it I figure I'll pull out everything that is awesome.

It's gonna be a mixture of both fantasy and sci-fi, fantasy type characters/scenarios but in space with mother-fucking space pirates. ...Also has a bit of an "anime" type feel.

Since I gotta fill up roughly 600 pages I'm just gonna combine everything I find awesome.

I want some ideas, so give me your favorite moments in fantasy/sci-fi.

If I'm referring to a a character as "the pirate Captain", should I be proper nouning the word "pirate" too?

"Sweat was beginning to bead at the pirate Captain’s brow."
