Probably my favourite novella, and I wish this was the real cover of a nice hardback copy.

In Franny and Zooey, on page 18 (in my edition at least), there's the following bit of dialogue:

"I'm sorry. I'm awful," she said. "I've just felt so destructive all week. It's awful. I'm horrible."
"You're [sic] letter didn't sound so goddam destructive."
Franny nodded solemnly.

I'm wondering, is this a mistake in the printing, or is Lane having a dig at Franny, because she made the opposite mistake in her letter to him? If this is the case, does that mean that in spoken American English it's possible to hear the difference between "you're" and "your", or is Lane supposed to be making the joke only to himself?

Also, thoughts on Franny and Zooey? There's the daily Catcher in the Rye thread, but I haven't seen any discussion of this one yet. I like it so far (I've only read the Franny part so far), it's a very accurate portrait of two kinds of people that we've all probably met and disliked at some point.

Can we have a Glass Family stories discussion?

I just finished reading Franny and Zooey, which means I'm officially acquainted with all of Salinger's books. The way that this tied together my image of the family and offered an outside perspective on Buddy and Seymour's relationship was great, considering that prior to this my main fascination was with Seymour: An Introduction.

But what about you, /lit/? What was your favorite Glass family story, and what is your opinion on Salinger's philosophy?

Ha. Hahaha.

Perhaps b/c Salinger's skill grew exponentially as a writer. Although there's a fair number of readers who see it as the inverse. Now try must read Raise High the Roofbeams Carpenter and Seymour: An Introduction, and Hapworth 16, 1924. They keep getting better and better - my opinion -- but yes, F&Z is a very, very special book.

God this was a good book. Well it's not a really a book but like a collection of story stories. I like this raise high the roof beam carpenters and nine stories better than catcher in the rye.
