OP here, i would like to clarify to all of the faggots calling this summertime thread that my intent was not to get those generic shitty love responses but any kind of well-written stuff, but fuck me for believing /lit/ could do better. (I personally have no issue with the baww letters albeit that was not the intent or purpose of this thread)

Would you prefer if Ulysses was written by "Anonymous" and not "James Joyce"? Or War and Peace by "Anonymous" instead of "Leo Tolstoy"? Because by opposing recognition on a board about literature you may as well be opposing the concept of "authors."

ok WTF /lit/. Everywhere I go and post my opinions about books on this website, everyone tells me that I need to "branch out of the high school reading list" (they don't say it that sophisticated but let's pretend they do). What the shit does that mean? Do you guys want me to read science-fiction and fantasy? Last time I checked, that stuff only appealed to the average reader in elementary and middle school. Do they want me to dumb myself down?

My English class this year gives us a pretty solid list of literature from around the world to read. Maybe there is a reason teachers don't assign shit to us that isn't cannon, and it's because it is bad and has no real significance.

And if not science-fiction and fantasy, then what? Are there any contemporary writers really worth reading? Writing styles today are much different and very unattractive to me, and I assume to most people on here, and that is why most of the threads on here are about classic literature.

Why do schools and stuff do this? I'm all against weed and everything but...wouldn't you want a rich, successful person who has never done drugs give you a speech on why drugs are bad as opposed to someone who used to be addicted?

What joy do people get out of rereading books? I know a kid who said he's read The Count of Monte Cristo over a dozen times and I see no point in that. There are some passages from books I reread but I don't think I've ever actually reread an entire book. And on here too a lot of people say they're rereading stuff. If some deeper meaning went over your head in the first reading, just go on SparkNotes or something.
