Gramsci is a useful read for this. He talks about how anything not opposed to the system is tolerated by it, to distract and confuse people. If true liberalism is a "dead" possibility in a post-liberal capitalist world, but tons of people still feel tugged toward it, it's a good idea to encourage them. Because it's a dead possibility, it will never go anywhere, so it will necessarily neutralize them if they cling to it. The system loves to throw up as many traps and pits like this as possible, appropriating them from the ruins of old ideas that were once living, so they seem plausible to people who are going through a crisis of conscience or faith.
