Not my first but probably my most overwhelming followed me taking acid and ripping bong. The trip was really intense and awful, but it was the next day that I smoked some weed and walked around my college campus with my friend that I became overwhelmed with the feeling that nothing was real. It's a difficult feeling to explain, but essentially I felt that there was truly nothing beneath the surface, no point to anything, and that as humans in the modern age 95% of what we do is walk around and look at things. In the following months I began to believe that only violence was real, violence and crime, and I planned to rob the local dairy queen in my home town. I very much intended to do it, but after 2 of my friends turned it down I realized I couldn't ask anyone else (loose lips etc) and I needed others to pull it off (the operation involved bikes and a getaway driver). So for about a year and a half I was in a deep depression, fueled by many things but always underscored by that feeling of nothing existing. It wasn't until I hit a rock bottom, destroying my relationship at the time, that I began genuinely trying to improve myself. After finally starting to really enjoy and appreciate life and its beauties, I unironically read Nietzsche, which affirmed life's depth and my love of it.
Now I realize that my crisis was fucking retarded and weak, ultimately. But the feeling was consuming.
>thanks for reading my blog

I just read Crime and Punishment and loved it. What Dogstoyevsky book should I read next?

is the best one I think I've listened to. Aside from it being an interesting philosophy it's immensely calming.

is an excellent collection of essays with a remarkable reader. While I wouldn't recommend listening to anything too intellectually involved, wordy, or complex (simply because you probably won't get a full understanding) I would say this is an exception.
There's also a channel called horrorbabble that does all sorts of pulp horror stories, tons of Lovecraft if you're into that stuff. The reader has a Vincent Price-like cadence.
Beyond these I would say just pick something you're interested in and start listening, you'll know right away if you don't like the reader (although some switch readers midway through, which is annoying). Religious texts are great. There are tons of myth, fairytale, or such stories collections out there as well.
My method is to choose a point that I will listen up to,and pay close attention until that point. After that if I'm still wide awake and interested I will choose another point to continue listening to, otherwise I will then listen with the intent of falling asleep. The next night I will resume where I last chose to stop listening intently. It's a great method because I will end up hearing sections multiple times, which aids in remembering and understanding. Only issue is some audiobooks don't have sections, so in that case you'll just have to look at the timestamp (which is annoying and more disruptive for sleep). Otherwise the comments will usually contain timestamps for chapters and such.
Hope this helps, i think it's a good way to fall asleep and also to fit in some more learning
