Not the very worst but it's the only one anybody will recognize out of the bad ones. The rest of the bad books were sophomoric garbage not even worth remembering.

I could barely get four chapters in. It's my second try (dropped it at chapter four the first time) but I really, really, really don't want to keep going... I know it's because of my ADHD but I feel like I could be spending my time more productively rather than reading this.

in general i think that neither men nor women will really be able to understand books about the coming of age of the opposite sex, but this is usually one that sticks out

Have just re-read The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger. Pretty relevant for Christmas haha
What are your thoughts about it? I guess I'm not that depressed to associate myself with Holden Caulfield, but I still like this book a lot. Pretty entertaining.

Objectively great book. Why does it get so much hate?

IMO a lot it stems from people who have yet to outgrow adolescence projecting their self-hatred onto Holden Caulfield. So many grown ass adults will say things like "i hated it, protagonist was whiny" as though they've never been teenagers before and don't understand what one is. Being edgy, egocentric, and unsure of your identity are all parts of growing up, so it makes no sense that a novel exploring these themes would warrant so much condemnation from people who think they're too smart for it. Self-consciousness =/= maturity.
