I knew a manager that got fired because he was using company resources to support his own business.
Writing seems to different. There is someone I know who works a in Legal department of another company who writes Sci-fi tomes in her spare time at work. Totally allowed to get away with it. It might just depend on your line of work and the level of responsibility and scrutiny you receive.
