Just started reading this. Any tips/things to keep in mind for an ideal reading experience?

I just finished the part where Ishmael attends the sermon with that old guy who talks about Jonah and man oh man am I bored! Every word I read was followed by a yawn, my eyes kept wandering all around looking for a distraction, had I not set out a goal for myself to finish this book by the end of the year I would've dropped it. Please tell me this book gets better, I've been told there's an entire chapter dedicated to the anatomy of a whale.

I'm going to start reading book related. What are some things I should know in advance and approximately how long will it take me to finish it?

Does anyone else hate epics with a passion? It's literally some autist power fantasy that rambles on for too long. These include any book (that is not a series) over 500 pages or 100 chapters long.
