It did make me say "why the fuck do people like this?" Not saying it because I "did not get it", because I was not familiar with that historical moment and maybe I was missing some background (I'm not American). I should give it a 2nd chance maybe.

But I was really, really dissapointed.

I had reached a point this year of despair and severe addiction. My outlook lead me to prison for a short stay. My third incarceration over the past five years; all for 6-12 months, nothing to drastic. I had never had the discipline e to read on my own Accord, however when forced upon me in high school I enjoyed the act immensely.

The facility I was at this last stay had something more than a simple "book cart" filled with James Patterson thrillers and I took full advantage of it. My first read was pic related.

I was blown away by the potential the resides in language as expressed in Fitzgeralds magnum opus. The use of imagery itself, more so than what the imagery alludes too, captivated quenched a long thirst within my soul to relate to others, and correlate my own shortcomings, through literature.

I understand my addiction needs to be continually addressed, however, I feel as though I've come into contact with greater beauties and truths than those attained through my opiate abuse. Literature remains a critical part of my recovery not only of addiction but also of my attempt to find significance in self destruction in a larger sense.

Never under estimate the power of literature.

Some argue that money is the root of evil, that becoming ultra rich leads to corruption of one;s self and others. Do you agree or disagree? This can be viewed in the Great Gatsby as Jay Gatsby believed that money at a young age can achieve his biggest dream gaining the heart of Daisy ,but that dream died like him.

when it comes to books, I hate people describing pic related as the great american novel. Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad book, it's just not great. The whole american dream/green light/daisy metaphor/message or whatever just feels empty and vapid.

The prose is incredibly basic, to the point where I feel it detracts from the book rather than illustrate Fitzgerald's brevity. The characters are extremely dull (although I can see an argument for this) and it was hardly saved by is plot which, to be quite honest, was boring with an ending that did not affect me much.

Again, it's not that I think this is a bad book, I just don't understand why it's the greatest american book to some people? It can't seriously be just because of the american dream 'message', because it wears itself very thin very quickly.

does anyone on /lit/ like TGG and can explain to me why it is revered as one of the best of all time?
