Can we talk about pic related? I liked this book very much in my teens when I started reading as a hobby. Before you punch me in the face, please consider the only things I had read by then were a bunch of Warhammer 40k fluff books and The Circle by Ted Dekker (kinda random bookshop pick). At the time, it seemed like an "interesting version of Harry Potter", mainly because the author cared about explaining the why, when and how of his magic system, and came up with the relatively realistic exploits of such, like people just making money up, who the fuck will even question it?

As I grow older, I grow more afraid of picking it up again, or even reading the sequels. I heard somewhere that the love interest is resurrected, which pretty much takes a big fat shit on the moral of the first book, which deals with consequences. But I like Grossman's style, being succinct and direct by unapologetically using "shit" and "piss" and "whore" to describe such things with no decor.

>What are you reading?
I just finished the Lev Grossman Magicians novels. It was a recommendation from /v/ of all places. It's the first book series I've read in about 5 years.
>How do you like it so far?
I liked it. Sure, everyone was a mary sue, but they're fucking magicians. You can't be a magician without being a sue to some degree. My original question in the /v/ thread was, "Why was Harry Potter such a success, yet I haven't read a series that takes magic school life and whatnot, but aim it at adults?" And then someone told me to read The Magicians and the other two novels. I got what I wanted, and it hit close to home at points, too. But apparently the TV series sucks massive fox god cock and I should never watch it.

I know my book taste is probably shit to all of you. That's fine. But if you guys could recommend me another book or series that has that whole magic school life setting that would be of higher standards, I'd appreciate it.

This book exposes fantasy for the juvenile escapism that it is. Every new fantasy book is like a drug. Once you consume it your life is once again meaningless and you need a new one soon to keep from offing yourself.

Halfway through I realized it's basically The Chronicles of Narnia Fan Fiction with Harry Potter jokes

Just finished pick related. It was entertaining I guess, but I don't get why the whole "magic school" shit never feels right beyond Harry Potter. Maybe it's because I'm older now, I can't feel it anymore. Author is still a hack for stealing everything, even if that's the point.
