There's a somewhat recent essay called The Agony of Eros by Byung-Chul Han that makes the argument that love requires the courage to accept self-negation for the sake of discovering the Other. Acts of self-negation (abstinence) draw a person outwards, towards the Other (God or the opposite sex), while acts of self-pleasing draw a person inwards into narcissism (make others simple adumbrations of the self, not individuals in and of their own self). Read this book in scope of Song of Songs and St. Teresa of Avila's or St. John of the Cross's reading of it and you'll find what you're looking for.
