Just finished this. While it was an okay read, I don't see how it would be a best seller. Has he sucked off the right people and gotten a airport stand spot or what?

The writing isn't amazing, and for a detective novel it felt like it was written by a teenager. Has anyone read more of the books and can tell me if it matures?

So. Is The Dresden Files a poorly written wish-fulfillment with a Gary Stu main protagonist.

Currently reading this book, and I'm not too impressed.

First of, I love Harry Dresden, he's a cool, selfless dude who's only fault is that he's too snarky for his own good.

However it seems like every single character other than him is a fucking idiot who only does stuff to further the plot of the book, and not because it's a realistic motivation for them. I had to put the book away when Harry got his hair stolen because of the tired old cliched scene with passer-bys ruining EVERYTHING, a trope I absolutely HATE in any work of fiction.

But not just random passer-bys who are idiots. Monica is an idiot (I can understand her fears, but not why she had to involve Harry, what did she stand to gain from it?), Murphy is an idiot (for somebody being so close to Harry, she's awfully quick to come to the conclusion "He must be the murderer"), Morgan is an idiot (for somebody who is described as holding law above all else he doesn't even TRY to look into anybody other than Harry being a possible culprit), et cetera.

Then again we have awesome scenes like Harry and the mafia and the elevator scene

I don't have many problems with the actual plot as such, only in the way it's implemented. Does it get better in the next couple of books? Because if it doesn't I'm afraid I'`ll put this series on hold and try my Butcher-luck with Codex Alera instead.
