>>Culture doesn't have an effect on lives, the material conditions of life do. Culture is a way to dress it all up and make it digestable. It might be nice to do sometimes, but in my heart I know I can't rely on it.

I think we have differing definitions of "culture" here. You seem to be viewing it as "high culture". For me it comprises everything that's "culturally constructed", which includes things as basic as language.

For example, I think it's part of culture that a native speaker of English, in pointing at himself, is indicating himself....whereas a native speaker of Guugu Yimithirr, in pointing at himself, is always indicating the direction in which he is pointing.

Anyway, bear that in mind the next time you meet someone who speaks Guugu Yimithirr.

My favorite book is The Satyricon.

It's about a student intellectual in Ancient Rome who accidentally arouses the wrath of Priapus, the Roman god of erect penises, and is forced into a picaresque adventure in which he encounters vulgar billionaires, pederastic poets, and plenty of other freaks in a broad social satire on literature, sex, and society in the reign of Nero in the first century A.D.

The book only survives in fragments because it was so obscene that it was burnt by Christians in the Middle Ages, so it's remarkable that we have as much of it as we do.

The author is Petronius, commonly known as Petronius Arbiter, after his role in Nero's court as "arbiter elegantiarum", or the "Arbiter of Elegance".

I am in my 30s.

from Wikipedia, here's a Priapic poem. Note it's spoken in the voice of the god himself, so it would be written underneath a statue with a huge erect cock.

Percidere, puer, moneo; futuere, puella;
barbatum furem tertia poena manet.
Femina si furtum faciet mihi virve puerve,
haec cunnum, caput hic praebeat, ille nates.
Per medios ibit pueros mediasque puellas
mentula, barbatis non nisi summa petet.

I warn you, boy, you will be screwed; girl, you will be fucked;
a third penalty awaits the bearded thief.
If a woman steals from me, or a man, or a boy,
let the first give me her cunt, the second his head, the third his buttocks.
My dick will go through the middle of boys and the middle of girls,
but with bearded men it will aim only for the top.
