James Joyce. Ulysses, and even more so FW, are efforts to create the Gesamtkunstwerk in literature. You will find they are comprised of nothing but literary leitmotifs, infinite melos, submergence in feeling and unconscious associations; the doubling of associations is Wagner's invention. Except whereas Joyce is purely literary, and must go between music and prose with bare words alone, Wagner can use both words and music to increase the potential of associations. Many modernist writers attempted this, Mallarme, Moore, Proust, Woolf, Mann, etc., but Joyce comes the closest. Wagner transforms Western history into a dream state, already in the text alone, and one should be familiar with that from FW. The influence of the particular themes and characters of Wagner's dramas on Joyce's works is enormous and is a topic of its own. "Mark well my new poem – it contains the world's beginning, and its end!" says Wagner.

Dujardin did it before him.

>I am going to reveal a secret: Les Lauriers sont coupés was undertaken with the crazy ambition to transpose into the literary domain Wagnerian methods
- Dujardin

>to the discoverer of interior monologue, from the unrepentant thief!
- Joyce's dedication to Dujardin in the French edition of Ulysses

>There are indeed hardly more than a dozen original themes in world LITERATURE ... Tristan und Isolde is an example of an original theme. Richard Wagner kept on modifying it, often unconsciously, in Lohengrin, in Tannhauser; and he thought he was treating something entirely new when he wrote Parsifal.

>Every race has made its own myths and it is in these that early drama often finds an outlet. The author of Parsifal has recognized this and hence his work is solid as a rock.
