So I have an assignment for a Victorian class in which we are supposed to write something that has to do with the themes we have discussed in class.

I'm going to write a stage play that kind of has some of the aesthetic feel of something Oscar Wilde would use.

I'm a little stuck on the plot here and was hoping some of you creative people would like to bounce around some ideas.

So far this is what's going on.

The main character is a "dandy" type of character. He's sitting up in his room at his house smoking a cigarette when his servant comes in and tells him there's a female here to see him.

He tells her to come in. She's a prostitute but it doesn't come out and say it right away.

Anyway, they start talking about stuff like art and the main character's morals and values and things like this. He pays her some money, she disrobes and then there's curtain.

The next scene starts off with him in his room with him smoking a cigarette again at the table, the prostitute has left the scene so this is later on. There's a painting of a nude woman (the prostitute) across the room on an easel. It's implied that he didn't fuck her but instead just painted her and used her to talk to her.

His friend comes over and is introduced. by the servant like before. They start talking and it turns out the friend is in love with a girl.

I want him to be in love with the girl who is the prostitute (like she's living a double life or something). He sees the painting and gets pissed off, but I can't think of a good way to end it.

Anybody want to talk with me about this?

What do you guys think about this argument? I'm reading The Autobiography of an ex-colored man by James Weldon Johnson and this really struck me as a brilliant argument.

"Can you name a single one of the great fundamental and original intellectual achievements which have raised man in the scale of civilization that may be credited to the Anglo-Saxon? The art of letters, of poetry, of music, of sculpture, of painting, of the drama, of architecture; the science of mathematics, of astronomy, of philosophy, of logic, of physics, of chemistry, the use of the metals and the principles of mechanics, were all invented or discovered by darker and what we now call inferior races and nations. We have carried many of these to their highest point of perfection, but the foundation was laid by others. D'o you know the only original contribution to civilization we can claim is what we have done in steam and electricity and in making implements of war more deadly; and there we worked largely on principles which we did not discover. Why, we didn't even originate the religion we use. We are a great race, the greatest in the world to-day, but we ought to remember that we are standing on a pile of past races, and enjoy our position with a little less show of arrogance. We are simply having our turn at the game, and we were a long time getting to it. After all, racial supremacy is merely a matter of dates in history. The man here who belongs to what is, all in all, the greatest race the world ever produced, is almost ashamed to own it. If the Anglo-Saxon is the source of everything good and great in the human race from the beginning, why wasn't the German forest the birthplace of civilization?"

Just saw this thread on another board but of course it was overrun with shit posts.

Figured I'd make it here since there seems to be actually intelligent people.

What's /lit/'s favorite quote? Whether it's from a film, novel, play, song, etc.

A personal favorite of mine has always been:

"I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity" - Edgar Allan Poe

Pic somewhat related

The main character in my story is going to be secretly gay (I think the reader will know, but nobody else). I want him to have a gay last name but I think John Fag is not subtle enough. Anybody want to help me?

So /lit/, I've been reading Oscar Wilde lately, have 5 plays, (Lady Windermere's Fan, The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband, A Woman of No Importance). Also I got a compilation of shorts from him (includes The Crime of Lord Arthur Saville, The Picture of mister W.H., and the Ballad of Reading's Prision).

I Plan reading De Profundis and Dorian Gray, maybe I'll read the Ghost of Cantervile too.

Is there anything else worth reading from him? I'm really enjoying his works!
