I know this is a very broad question, but I'll ask anyway. If I want to cultivate a functional understanding of our current society, that is comprehending the weft and wane of modern man, which books or other resources should I consult?

Hey lit, how do I become smarter?

I want to be eloquent with my thoughts, I want to have deep political and philosophical opinions, and I want to be cultured and knowledgeable.

I read things that interest me, but about a month later I forget literally everything.

So what should I be reading? I feel retarded. I can't hold a conversation with someone very intelligent.
