>in order to talk about genre fiction, you'd have had to read the books, and who on /lit/ would want to do that?
This actually makes the most sense. Anyway I dont want to derail the last bastion of genre discussion here so I will turn now to ask what others think about Philip K. Dick and more specifically why all his books have abrupt and often unsatisfying endings. Like he seems to intentionally avoid tying up loose ends.

ability to write exciting crackerjack sci fi stories with entirely novel concepts at the time concerning human nature, spirituality, commodification, a reality. He's not a prose stylist or character writer but I definitely think he ranks among America's best postmodern writers. his contemporary non sci fi fiction is also fantastic which is a testament to his storytellng

I've been reading a lot of Philip K. Dick lately. Just the other day at work (security guard for a parking garage) a homeless guy started talking to me, and he looked EXACTLY like PKD. I mean EXACTLY. He started joking around with me, something like this
>*points to sign that says "new resident parking* "you know, i'm a resident..."
>*long pause* "...but not of here" *laughs at his own joke*
>"where are you a resident of?" I asked him
>"alpha centauri, me an my bud" *points at his friend down the street* "are headed over there
>i laugh at this point cause i figure he's joking and i go along with it "that's a long way away. how do you plan on getting there"
>"space ship. hopefully there's some fueling stations on the way"
>that's when it hit me that he looked exactly like PKD. I ask him if he reads science fiction, that he looks like PKD, and ask him if he knows who PKD is
>he looks at me with a very subtle shock that he's trying to hide, like i just recognized him, and says no, then changes the subject to some science fiction books and movies.

I swear some of dicks theories about parallel universes and timelines are true. I juts met PKD. He was a smelly homeless guy, but it was him. This was in Los Angeles, btw, which makes it even more eerie.

Not trolling but is reading books especially fiction in particular a waste of time?
Recently this was pointed out to me and it got me thinking it might just be. Just like watching movies all the time reading books are a black hole of wasted time. Reading fiction is basically filling my head with junk food. Also not being a writer or English major this is an unproductive hobby as I get nothing I can use in daily life. I'm also ostracizing myself from the world with such an introverted hobby. Unless I'm reading math, science, or programming textbooks I'm ultimately just looking for a form of escapism and fueling my own laziness.
Idk what do you guys think? This isn't the first time either I've been told this either.
