I don't know if I got the right message from this, but the biggest idea I got was that Celine cannot decide who he hates(or maybe disgusts is the right word) more--everyone else or himself.

I also saw Robinson as a foil for Bardamu. One that is willing to take "the big leap" like Kurtz and abandon all pretensions of society.

Am I wrong? I loved the pacing of the book. I feel the last 1/3rd, when he gets back to France, has a wonderful tempo where Bardamu is walking headlong into oblivion.

Can anything ever top this? Is this the roof when it comes to brutaly honest prose writing?

Journey to the End of the Night is about the threadbare exploits of a sybaritic poltroon leching his way across multiple continents. From what I gather, this book is a thinly veiled autobiography regularly interspersed with absurd bohemian divagations spawned from the author's own nihilistic sense of humor. Journey will appeal to fans of Henry Miller and disgust the woke generation.

Like Miller, Celine is a narcissist and misogynistic womanizer. This book is filled with the protagonist's whoring adventures. You are required to become numb to the intense objectification of women in order to continue reading. You will also be confronted with the casual dehumanization of Africans during the first quarter. For ethical reasons, there was never any chance of me finishing this book, let alone reviewing it well.

But to be fair, there is a reason why people keep recommending this book decades after its first edition. Celine's prose is quirky, irreverent, humorous and creative. To pre-civil rights white people used to buttoned-down patrician novels from the Madame Bovary mold, this book must have seemed like a revelation -- the liberation of the white male id (like the world really needed that). However, like Miller, Celine has little narrative skill apart from his -- albeit impressive -- descriptive bombast. Character development, plot, suspense, psychology and dialogue have all been dwarfed to make room for Celine's opinionated rants. What we are left with is sort of like a protracted fireside reminiscence as told by somebody's creepy pervert uncle.

I didn't bother finishing this book and I doubt I ever will. If you are a fan of nihilistic beat-poetry, give this a try. If you are smart enough to know that nihilism isn't even an ethos, don't waste your time. The prose isn't that good.

What am I getting into? I have almost no context for this book or if it's even worth reading. So far the WW1 shit is getting exhausting and repetitive. Someone smarter than me told me to read it so here I am.
