I purchased the Iliad two years ago and put off reading it until about three weeks ago. I just discovered my copy contains a major misprint and is missing 33 pages and 3 books. Should I read the missing pages online or just kill myself?

When people say that you need a good understanding of literature before approaching someone like James Joyce, what exactly do they mean? What are you supposed to read to have a good understanding of literature? What knowledge is necessary?

Evening /lit/.
I have an essay due this week on the "Ethnic Characterisation of Illiad", as said by my Professor. Now, I have some doubts as to what I should include. ShouldI simply describe who are the people involved in each side of the war?
Some insight would be very appreaciated, thank you.

Is The Iliad really worth reading in English? Does it lose its poetic value in the translation? I'd like to read it, but I feel like reading carefully crafted poetry in a different language might kind of defeat the purpose.

I'm writing a paper. It's about who is the most heroic of the characters in the Iliad. I understand that the contemporary notions of heroism are completely un-akin to those of the ancient world but...do you think I'd be a dick to argue for Hector? The entire god damn book is about Achilles, but he's such a bitch.

I was wondering if lit could tell me what the most readable prose translation of the Iliad would be?

The Iliad and/or Game of Thrones

>>2292219 why??? It's like a watered down version of the Iliad. You get culture instead of deep philosophy.

Hey /lit/,

If I hypothetically wanted to read every book ever written, would The Iliad be the place to start seeing as it's the first narrative work?

personally I thought the odyssey was poorly paced, the end book was herp, and it doesn't have the same gut-wrenching confliction between wasted youth and immortality via glory.

The Iliad or The Odyssey, which of Homer's epics do you like better?

I myself preferred the Odyssey, feeling it read smoother and provided for a more focused story as it revolved around one character. I'm curious to see what other's think, as the opinions of my colleagues were varied.

>Read the Iliad
>Expect the Trojan horse to be an integral part of the story
>Expect the death of Achilles to be the climax of the book

How wrong I was.

I need help choosing a character from The Iliad to write about for an English essay and I was wondering if I could get some help!

The eighteenth-century British novelist Laurence Sterne wrote, "No body, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man's mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time." Choose a character from The Iliad whose mind is being pulled in conflicting directions by two compelling desires, ambitions, obligations, or influences. Then, in a well-organized essay, identify each of the two conflicting fores and explain how this conflict within one character illuminates the meaning of the work as a whole.

I just returned from the library with Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey.

I guess they seems pretty hard to read, but I hope they will be worth it.

Anyone here read them? What can I expect?
