>Do you look down on people who don’t read?
Sometimes, especially if they spend hours and hours watching tv or playing vidya. It's so easy to carve off ONE hour of completely wasted time to pick up a book. Then again maybe it's not so easy if your dopamine receptors are completely deep fried. Reading doesn't necessarily make you intelligent and not reading doesn't mean you're a retard. There are plenty of interesting, worthwhile people who simply don't enjoy sitting down and reading some old book with their free time.

What English, Spanish or German translations of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin would /lit/ recommend?

The OP of >>16073416 asked if anyone had a copy of Hofstadter's translation of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin, and I forgot to reply in time that I do have a copy. Bought it a few months ago in fact.

Anyway let's discuss this novel-in-verse and poetry translation in general.

I study computer science and I am attempting to analyze the semantic textual similarities between various different translations of Pushkin's Eugene Onegin.

So far I have found that Nabokov's translation, which is considered to be the most literal in terms of word to word lexical translation from the Russian, is the most similar to other translations. This I suppose is because this version can be used as a sort of “check” for linguistic closeness to the original Russian, and all translations will inherently be similar to this, if they are to be derived from Pushkin’s original Russian.

Does anyone have access to a copy of Hofstadter's translation? It is supposedly an imitation and not a translation, and as such I'd like to analyze how its semantics differ from other versions. I want to confirm that this version would be the most semantically different from the others.

I can't even tell if the people of modern /lit/ read at all or have actual opinions. They'll posture as if they're intelligent and make their stupid insults but when you ask them what belief they have, or ask them to clarify on their opinions, they are totally unable to do these things.

Which are good examples or approaches of duels in fiction?

I can think of:
Pushkin's Eugene Oneguin and The Shot.

Turgenev's Fathers & Sons

Lermontov's A Hero of our Time

It's one of my biggest pleasures to read a good duel, but I don't know many examples.

Please help.

Is it fine if my book is just a cheap knock-off version of a more popular book? I'm not actively trying to imitate the author in question but the genre is so unknown to the masses that it'll look like I just took his work, rewrote some bits, and made a shittier version of it. Also I really like his work, so I did take some inspiration from them, which only worsens the problem to be honest.

Should I still try and get published?

I love the fact that whenever /pol/tards start praising classical art 90% of the art they post is obscure 19th century kitsch that you'd never see in an art history book.

Some of it is good, some of it is bad. Most of the stuff that's been posted in this thread is 10/10.

The real problem I have with modern art is the works that try and make a "statement". Not an issue in itself, but they try so hard to be controversial but don't go all the way, making the whole thing a toothless tiger. I'm talking about the picture of Jesus immersed in urine, etc. It's like the adult version of the "LOL so edgy xD" shit that teenage kids do.

I enjoy realism in paintings and sculpture, and I'm a bit sad that the realist tradition has fallen by the wayside, because I really don't think photography captures the same essence. I understand why it's no longer as popular, and a lot of modern art is really, really good, but I also wish we could have a token amount of new realist works during exhibitions.

This is all coming from what /lit/ would call a poltard, by the way.

Can someone recommend me a good translation of Eugene Onegin? I can read in English and in French.

I was interested in Nabokov's one because he ditched the rhymes to stick closer to the meaning, but I didn't find the book. I'm aware his work got flamed by his buddy but whatever.

A couple of weeks ago I made a thread where I said I'll quit drinking and asked for "books for this feel."

That didn't work out. I will enter rehab on Monday.

And I wanna ask again, any books for this feel?
I think it to be extremely helpful reading something I can relate to in such a situation.

When will I be good enough
to speak among the greats
open my mouth and hear
I've reached a state of grace
but what man knows the word of god
when honestly it's spoke?
Not even he who speaks can know
If he's part of a joke

Conspiracy constrains my mind
I see the network just behind
the facade woven to confine
all my probing to the line
often spoken shown and primed
'till all are blind, speak others' minds
guided through impulse to find
our heads back up our asses
swallowed by our shit
BEFORE I WENT TO THE ER FOR HEART PALPITATIONS RECENTLY BECAUSE I DRINK TOO MUCH, SLEEP TOO LITTLE, EAT LIKE SHIT, AND CONSUME HUGE AMOUNTS OF CAFFEINE TO COMPENSATE

HA

The dialogue is interesting, and some of the descriptions are very engaging. I also like the idea. If i had one criticism, it would be the number of the adverbs you use i.e "he said, defeatedly" and "she said, airily" are kind of unnecessary when the dialogue is obviously implying this kind of delivery from the characters.

>>6363912
For this I have to agree w/ >>6364176 . Otherwise I thought it was okay.

2K+ words here. I'm still insecure about how the ending translates, so any feedback at all would be helpful.
