Just because he didn't read Kafka doesn't mean he didn't read many other great authors. You can't write well if you don't read a lot. I know people who write almost everyday, but their stories suck because all they do is recycle comic book and action movie tropes. You need to read extensively to know what makes fiction work. Anybody who says otherwise should consider anything but writing as a profession.
