What is /lit/'s opinion on books with absolutely no internal monologue? Where everything is stated as if from an outside observer who is not in any character's head.

I like it because I think it's rather immersive.

What is it about hard-boiled detective novels that appeals to people so much? I don't dislike them, I just think it's an interesting phenomenon, people always just seem to find the stories intoxicating. What elements do you think they have that really get at what people want from stories?
