Because it will lead the way to even more retarded YA fiction and will not lead to literacy, but instead to a dead end.

Just got around to finally reading this.

My only complaint so far...

Why did Hermoine get placed into Griffindor? Isn't she the very definition of a Ravenclaw?

elementary school. stephanie was reading harry potter vol.2 which had just come out. she seemed pretty hyped, chatting about it as we scuffed the bark chips around our turf on the playground. previously reading had always felt compulsory. but a few days later i checked out vol.1 rowling at the library. never went back.
(i've never distinguished between 'classics' and non-. just read whatever looked worth giving a try, so they've always been sprinkled in, here and there.)

So, I just came back from the latest Hairy Potter movie. Having read the books I got to thinking about how they were viewed on /lit/, so i decided to come ask.

I know full well that the majority of literary critics seem to hate the books, but i wanted to see what you all think of them.

Also, I do not generally post on /lit/, my main board is /mu/.

im 19 and i have been looking for a good book or series of books to read. some friends recommended the harry potter series. I mentioned that these books would probably be too childish for me to be interested in them. is the series worth reading or am i better off searching in another direction?

"The Stone is known in the US books and films as the Sorcerer's Stone, which is also the name of the US book & movie. This was so because American children were presumedly not as familiar with real-world mythology surrounding the Philosopher's Stone."
Sauce: http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Philosopher's_Stone#Behind_the_scenes

That's right, because American audiences were considered too dumb and uncultured, they changed the name of the fucking book and the name of an important plot element.

America is that dumb.

WAIT LIT! DON'T RAGE! LET ME EXPLAIN! I feel like nobody on this board reads to enjoy the story, to find themselves in the shoes of the protagonist. It seems like you all are the type of people to pretentiously claim that no book is a good book unless it is a book that only 2 people have read ever and 1 of them is the author. Now, I put HP up because it is my first foray into the "Holy shitballs! Books are the tits!" experience. People always say "HP was a great idea, but another author could have done it better." But that's like saying that the book is better than the movie. It presumes that you can even make a comparison on an objective scale. But no matter what, they are ADAPTATIONS of a universe, and they each bring their own thing to the table. So I'm just wondering, I guess, what is the book out there that you would defend in a fistfight when someone said that it was a P.O.S.? Pic related, it's mine. Go fuck yourselves. Also, inb4 troll.

tl;dr People hate HP and other books because author is mediocre. What book do you like that others say is shit?
