The ending was retarded because it was rushed and D&D were midwits at best who couldn't write their way out of a paper bag. A lot of the plot points people hated could actually work well if done correctly.
>Bran as King - instead of being some gay shit about having 'the best story', can instead be about the fact that he's become a demigod, tragically lost a lot of his humanity, and is now powerful beyond measure. Will likely be wrapped up in the heresy theories related to a pact between humans and the others, going back to the original dark night. Has a lot of Echoes in Fisher King and Corn King mythology.
>Danaerys burning down Kings Landing - this is just traditional Shakespearean tragedy if done right. Ambition and a blind belief in destiny slowly overtake nobility of purpose. Made a lot more believable with Aegon being present in the book, obscuring the righteousness of her claim.
>John resurrection not being explained or having consequences - in the books we already have a chapter from a one off POV that was clearly only written to show that wargs' consciousness inhabits their animal once they die and slowly merges with the animal's personality. So we know Jon will go into Ghost, and most likely become more wolf-ish in the process. Then we just need a little magic to get him back into his dead body, possibly related to the magic of the others which animates dead bodies already. It's all there for the taking.
>Euron being a shit villain: in the show he is a mid-tier pirate with no presence whose most memorable moment is joking about sticking a digit up Cersei's arse. In the books (especially the preview chapter from Aeron's POV) he's being built up to be this hyped Lovecraftian megalomaniac who plans on mass sacrifice to bring about a new apocalyptic age with him ruling over everything.

I could go on but the clues are already there that if it ever gets published, the same story could be told well if given proper treatment. The only thing I will never defend is Arya one shotting the Night King and defeating the entire threat of the Others having had no involvement in their story. But I have hope that that is so appallingly written that that was just another D&D fuck up.
