Anyone know any books with a similar vibe to Planescape: Torment? (I.e. something imaginatively inventive AND emotional.)

Most of the authors I've read that are inventive in the same way (Calvino, Borges, Vance, etc) lack the heart the game had.

Would something more genre-focused ala China Mieville, Michael Moorcock, or the Strugatsky brothers be a better place to look?

Looking to AAA games for stories or artistic expression is like watching the new Mulan and declaring that movies can't be an artform because of how shit it was.

If you want to judge a game based on the merits of its stories I would recommend going back to the early 2000's and late 90's before the creative departments were gutted in favor of maximum commercialization. Even then you had to find diamonds among the vaporware but pic related was a true masterpiece.
