But by what are they so convinced that they are right? I know the idea of the media telling them they are smart and they are so dumb that they believe them, but I think that there is a more strange and insidious psychic structure causing this attitude. They must have realized something at some point in adolescence that turned them into "a person who is smart and therefore a person who knows better than anyone with a non mainstream belief". I think they see rationalism and poor logic as a kind of subculture that they facilitate. Basically people who act this way think that doing so will get them laid (they think this subconsciously). Why else would this behavior be so aggressive?
