In the Eddas, Odin is described as possessing a powerful magical ring that replicates itself every might, making the owner infinitely rich. The first people to give wedding rings as a symbol of "binding" were ancient pagans. The Ring in LOTR is the physical symbol of greed (much like Odin's ring Draupnir was a symbol of wealth) and envy, making it entirely Anti-Christian in every way.
How could you POSSIBLY think that Tolkien was trying to do some secret Pagan handshake with this?
