Can one be a Christian-Atheist or Culturally Christian, in the same way that there are Jewish Atheists?

Also, is the Bible worth reading even if you are rationally minded?

brfags and portugas, what is your preferred portuguese translation of the bible? I'm finishing the KJV (in english of course) and was looking for one in portuguese now to re-read some of the books. went out looking for the joão ferreira de almeida's translation, but only could find the "modern language edition", in which they mutilated the original translation, 100% disgusting

How would you improve the Bible, /lit/? Remove all those boring genealogies of people no one cares about? More sexy bits like Song of Solomon? Make God's character more consistent?

I made the Christianity thread the other day, and compiled all your comments in a word document along with saving the images.

Today I picked up a new Oxford Annotated Bible with Apocrypha, along with Confessions of St Augustine. Mere Christianity was checked out for some reason (praise jesus)

How should I approach the bible? I have the same interest as you, from a literary standpoint and possible convert. I am interested in Christian logic and ethics, along with the "big questions"

please guide me

I thought it was NKJV that was the /lit/ approved translation?

Hey /lit/. I want to some great books that shaped our culture (western) and other ones and would like to read some of the best religious texts out there.

As a starter, I want to start with the Bible, but I know it was heavily changed with the times. Which translation of the Bible is truest to the original scriptures? I can read in English or in Portuguese if it would somehow be a more faithful translation. Thanks.

What is the most recommended version of the Bible? KJV and all the other editions go over my head and I just want to read the original text. Is there a general "best"?

Why was Jesus' sacrifice necessary to forgive us all? Why wasn't it enough for God to just forgive us? He is all powerful, after all.

>flames over Apostles heads and everybody hearing their words in their own native language
>turning water into wine
>multiplying bread
>walking on water
>rising from the dead
>passing through stone walls
>vague promises of eternal life
Why do people believe that this stuff actually happened? What makes it any different than other ridiculous mythology? While you can say 'it's a metaphor' about stories in the old testament, I've found that even Catholic priests believe that this stuff actually occurred as described in the gospels. What makes people believe that these seemingly ridiculous events actually happened?

If the bible is a piece of literature, isn't worshipping the text of the bible as sacred a kind of idol worship? Shouldn't the bible then rather be read, and then discarded as the reader internalized the message of God from within?

What do you do with books you don't need anymore? I recently got a new bookshelf and decided to purge stuff from my stacks of books that I no longer need. Local libraries take donations which could lead to some books ending up in good hands. What about my bibles though? I have like 6 and I don't want any of them, and I bet libraries just throw them out. Are there any Christian organizations that take old bibles and ship them to poor children in Africa or something?
