George did the right thing in the context of his own situation and what each character represented. Lenny was incapable of fleeing from anyone and nobody was going to really understand that Lenny had no intent to harm Curley's wife. Rather than let Lenny suffer, George killed him. I see that as being pretty merciful. And you really cannot consider Lenny to be a proper moral agent in this story, he doesn't have the requisite mental capacity.
