Years ago I read the first five books of Anne Rice's vampire chronicles.

I recently remembered a reference she made in Queen of the Damned to a kind of creature that she didn't mention anywhere else in the books as far as I know. But there are so many books set in that universe that it might've been explained at some point.

I think it was something that ran away from Khayman after he woke up. It was described as having darker skin than a human (as opposed to a vampire, which has lighter skin), being immortal, being able to recognize a vampire on sight, and being afraid of vampires.

I can't remember the exact quote, and I can't seem to find it again. I really don't want to have to reread the whole book just to find a single sentence, but I might end up having to. I've tried googling it, but I haven't been able to find anything.

Does anyone know what that creature was? Did she ever elaborate on it?

On Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, did her conversion to Christianity change the tone or focus of the series? I ask because I've read Narnia and LOTR and have had my fill of Not-Bible stories in my fantasy.
