I hate how I get treated like an internally-conflicted closeted gay man every time I bring up my appreciation of the institution of Greek pederasty. It's not fair. The whole concept of sexual identity is absurd and a modern invention in the first place. In the 19th century "Greek love" was all the craze in certain circles like that of Byron's and yet nobody today thinks of Byron as a "gay" man with all its connotations. Basically, how do I distinguish my tasteful appreciation of homoeroticism in the arts from LGBT+ activism? Whether I've had gay sex or not (I have) is beside the point.

Here's a tip while reading scholarly books: if it has multiple authors, chances are that it touches on retarded issues like gender and multiculturalism; if it was written by a single person, chances are that it does not touch retarded issues, and goes straight into the history.
In your case, the companion to..., books always have multiple authors.
