It's better than the memes suggest. And they suggest it's one of the best books ever written so...

Ulysses, it's had its ups and downs for me but it's been an intense experience. The chapters I loved I really loved and the chapters I hated I really hated

Good for you, I'm about to finish Ulysses and will read Jerusalem once I get it in the mail, I am extremely skeptical that it will be anywhere close to the density and masterful prose that is Ulysses.

I have the Oxford versions of all of Joyce's work and I love them. The spines are shit though, you have to be sort of careful to break them in properly. Ultimately I like modern library paperbacks more.

It does, I'm reading the Oxford edition and while there are errors they are pointed out in the endnotes and if you are anything like me the endnotes are extremely helpful as they give you all sorts of historically relevant information as well as all sorts of translations (gaelic, Latin, etc.), As well as all literary references. I am happy with the Oxford edition but I can understand the appeal of a corrected edition.

I'm about 150 pages in so far and I am certain that I'm missing at least 2/3 of the subtleties inlaid in this book. That being said 1/3 of of them is more content and complexity than you find in your average 10 classics combined.

I'm enjoying Ulysses so far more than I've enjoyed any other book and I'm already looking forward to reading some of the material Joyce repeatedly references and then re-reading Ulysses in a year or so.

Wow you finished it? Did you read it with a supplementary text?

I'm reading Ulysses right now and I'm very interested in Finnegan's wake as well as Joseph Campbells book on it.

After reading it do you feel like you grasped an overall plot?

I have the Oxford world classics edition and in my opinion it both looks the nicest and is the best in content. The endnotes are amazing and for every chapter it gives you the corresponding parts in the Odyssey and a chapter summary. I've been chugging along great with this edition so far without a supplementary book and I'm loving it.

Oh and there's a map I'm the front which helps with the visualization of it all.
