I find that current Christian literature, especially in America, tends to "clean up" the figure of Jesus, or present Him as palatable and uncontroversial to a modern audience (the worst offenders being people like Joel Osteen who make Him into little more than a self-help coach.) By contrast, the historical and Biblical person something of a revolutionary, an apocalyptic prophet constantly at odds with religious, governmental, and economic establishments. Are there any books from previous eras/places with a more interesting perspective? (I did try The Kingdom of God is Within You, which was interesting but not quite what I was looking for).
