After Union kinda shitted itself to death and massive poverty just smashed everyone's faces just to prove a point, markets flooded with western food, movies, music and jeans cultivated this adoration with western culture of excess and corporatism.
Imagine - you live in late 90s Russia, country you were born in is gone and it's ideals are dust, your neighbor just jumped out of window because he has debts to mafia, and the only repose from this is Rocky 3 on VHS. You look at your yesterdays enemies and see them doing great, better than you were doing in best of times, and, naturally, you develop adoration and hate for them in equal measures.
Russia has this fucked up victim complex there it hates everything American because "muh culture", but has such insane fixation on western culture it doesn't try to look inside itself and just churns out derivatives "just like in the west", and the result is shit. Boeviks are american action movies, but shit, Hraniteli are american superheroes, but shit, fantastika are american si-fi and fantasy, but shit.
If you watch an ad for russian original whatever, it's gonna start with the words "RUSSIAN ANSWER TO /AMERICAN THING/", and american thing is still better and it's just an insane feedback loop of being butthurt because west does shit better.

Any advice on proliferating free copies of certain books as widely as possible in a way that'll attract attention? I'm not concerned with making money off these things but I want them to spread like AIDS.

The whole movie makes Wallace sound/look a lot more faggy than he actually was (don't get me wrong he is a cocksucker) . The dramatic parts about solitary confinement are blown out of proportion in the movie, whereas on the tape he's almost laughing about it.
Netflix is garbage and I predicted as soon as someone told me this movie was up on there that It'd make all the zoomers wanna read DFW. Anyone who wants to read IJ after watching this should skip to the part where you kick the chair and die because you will never understand the point of the book.
