Is the answer to modern life really just a cabin in the woods?

I agree that it is a sign of decadence, and probably why we see so many people out there on the internet today musing about their fantasy of going out and living in the woods (and the few who do it: uncle ted, mccandless, forest anon, etc). But the writing itself, and the philosophies thus promoted, are hardly signs of decline beyond a criticism of decadence. In fact, I think it takes the contrast of modernity to actually stumble upon a matter-of-fact secular (ish) appreciation of nature. Nature essays have made generous contributions to science which have given us information that hopefully will be used to curtail the endless manifest destined obliteration of wilderness and promote stewardship. And naturalist narratives show an appreciation of the natural world that isnt hinged on anthropomorphism of nature, but nature itself. I think these are signs of progress in thought.
