CHAPTER ONE

It was half-past eleven when she came.

They say to write a great novel you need a good story, good characters and a typewriter. Well, I had the typewriter. I’d been sitting at that goddamned desk for four hours with nothing to show for it but a half-empty glass and the sort of headache that aspirin doesn’t want to know about. The sheet of paper in front of me looked as big and empty as the Mohave desert.

So the knock on the door came as a welcome interruption. I didn’t even stop to wonder what sort of client might be calling on a licensed Literary Investigator at half-past eleven in the evening.

Perhaps I should have.

I'd always thought of grey as a conservative colour. Well, this dame wore grey all right, but it looked about as conservative as a grey coat of paint on a stick of dynamite.

Something didn't add up. A girl like that could get all the help she needed for nothing, in any city in the world, just by walking down a street with men in it.

So why had she climbed up six flights of stairs to see me?
