what are some books about wasting your entire youth getting nothing accomplished and just doing the same monotonous tasks with absolutely nothing to show for it?

I've asked /lit/ to find it for me multiple times, but no one has ever come through for me. It was about kids going underground to a world full of green people, and at one point one of them got kidnapped and they had to paint themselves green to save the captured kid.
