I would agree as a general principle, but specfic examples say otherwise. For instance, the most intelligent person I have had the pleasure of meeting was also perpetually joyful. Unless she was an emotional wreck in private (very doubtful), I would conclude that intelligence only subsequently brings a miserable outlook if you invest your time in the pursuit of intellectual works that high-light the pessimistic nature of life.
