The trial is the only book that I hate that I still think about all the time...

Just wondering lit. Did Kafka finish this book or was the strange ending written by someone else?

This has to be the most boring book I've ever read.
Are Kafka's other stories more interesting or is he being praised as one of the major figures of 20th-century literature for a reason I do not understand at all?

No budget?

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

Josef K: Emile Hirsch

Fräulein Bürstner: Natalie Portman

Fräulein Montag: Scarlett Johansson

Frau Grubach: Glenn Close or Judi Dench

Uncle Carl: Christoph Waltz

Herr Huld: Kevin Spacey

The Chief Clerk: Alec Baldwin

Leni: Rooney Mara

The President: Gary Oldman

I don't know. I have to think about the rest. I just think Winding Refn would do a good job with Kafka.

Had you read the trial before? What did you think of it? I'm thinking of rereading it, I wasn't crazy about it.

I'm The Trial guy from earlier and I would love to hear more if your willing to share, your insight on The Metamorphosis is great.

Also I know there is an ending to The Trial I was just under the impression that it was written by someone else for some strange reason.

1. What is this book about?
2. For those who've seen it, what are your thoughts on the Orson Welles film adaptation?

So I just finished The Trial. I wracking my brain the whole read to try and draw meaning from all the symbols in it. It was tough as nuts and I only had a few clever moments.

I did what I normally do after finishing novels and look up discussions on an archive. I found some really interesting points. Enter analysis:

For one, K's main guilt may be his rejection that he has any guilt, in any regards. This is supported with the talk with the priest where he says, "can anyone generally be guilty... aren't we all human," and the priest responds, "that's how all guilty people talk."

Also someone mentioned the law may be unreadable to K. because it's not worldly; it's metaphysical law. Then they went further to call his lawyer a philosopher! I actually think this is very clever. It could follow that judges are scientists (some being great and all but all of them still not knowing what's going on even though working for the system (like the doorman not knowing the Law)). This is also supported by the priest talk as after the doorman speech K states his brain is not used to thinking in that way (abstractly), he is just a banker.

I felt from the start that the novel was more than just a statement on bureaucracy. I'm glad I was right about at least that, but something troubles me. I would have never thought of this myself. To be honest I am just starting to read a good bit when I used to not at all. Does analysis become easier? I'd feel bad not being able to come up with this kind of stuff myself every time I read a book.

Also The Trial theories thread. What are your theories?
