After Augustine pagans couldn't argue against Christianity anymore since his arguments were irrefutable. It's why paganism died out after Augustines time, there was no way to maintain an intellectual paganism in a world where Augustine had so thoroughly refuted that it can exist without Christianity that it's adherents simply died out.

How did Augustine single handedly destroy every single pagan philosopher then? For being uneducated country bumpkins it sure is weird that Christians dominated Pagans in rhetoric so thoroughly that it ceased to be within a few generations of Christianity being legalized.

Augustine makes people chimp out a bit because he is the ultimate example of Christianity telling people they can't just have sexual pleasure whenever they want, and people get really mad at that.

Why do christcucks believe they have any say in criticizing everyone else's Gods when their God is the most immoral and evil tyrant to come out of the Canaanite pantheon?

>devote your whole life to writing absolutely nothing of value and seething about any other doctrine or religion

Imagine bragging about being culture preservers while preserving the bare minimum culture. Christcucks are absolutely mentally ill.

Couldn't this crypto-kike just stop thinking about pagans 24/7? Every time i check the pre-christian authors which are said to have exposed paganism, their actual quotes turn out to be incorrect. How was he supposed to teach us how to interpret the Bible if he couldn't even read correctly the pagans he was so buttblasted about?

'Just in the same way, what are called vices in the soul are nothing but privations of natural good. And when they are cured, they are not transferred elsewhere: when they cease to exist in the healthy soul, they cannot exist anywhere else.'

If Evil is a lack, a deficiency, an absence of Good, a lack of substance, does this mean that an Evil entity, say a hypothetical demon or witch can never be powerful?

This. Have you read Augustine? He very easily modifies a Platonic conception of metaphysics to fit the Christian worldview. Read the City of God.

I'm a Platonist/Augustinian. I feel like the Plato/Aristotle distinction extends into Christianity in the form of the divide between Augustine and Aquinas. Augustine skews more towards Plato, while Aquinas, obviously, skews more towards Aristotle. They're both orthodox, so they both agree on a lot, but they've got different points of emphasis based on their proximity to their respectively most influential Greek philosophers. Anyone who's an instinctive Platonist is probably going to be an instinctive Augustinian, and anyone who's an instinctive Aristotelian is probably going to be an instinctive Thomist.

So many of these threads on /lit/. But they all have one solution:

The Confessions, by Augustine. Everyone on /lit/ who hasn't read the Confessions should read them. If you are miserable, and you live in the 21st Century, the Confessions is an extremely relatable book.

Today is the feast day of St. Augustine of Hippo, one of the most towering figures in the entire Western intellectual tradition.

Say something nice about him!
