I prefer reading McCarthy to Faulkner, Dickens, Steinbeck, Williams, Oakley Hall, Pynchon, Hunter S Thompson, Kerouac and Conrad.
I did enjoy reading Moby Dick more than any of McCarthys novels but I dropped the confidence man after 3-4 chapters

I also felt like I was forcing myself to finish lotr, Tolkien just shoving jolly ol' england in your face for over a thousand pages grew tiresome, the silmarillion had more of an effect on me but I'd rather read Wolfe or Vance

for me its 6-15 pages an hour
